Analysts: Game Industry Weathering Economic Downturn
>> From gamasutra.com:
Following the release of February's NPD sales figures, analysts have called out its particularly strong performance in light of macroeconomic downturns, calling the industry near 'recession-proof.'
Said simExchange's Jesse Divnich, "Today, retailers announced that they have posted negative same store sales growth for February and many economists warned that the United States economy is currently in a recession or on the verge of one."
"Irrespective to that," he continued, "the video game industry continues to post record growth and although no leisure/entertainment sector can be considered 'recession proof,' the video game industry continues to prove to be one of the very few industries to have the least elasticity to the current economic environment." US price cut 'only feasible option' for Microsoft
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
In the wake of Microsoft's announcement at the beginning of this week that it was cutting the price of the Xbox 360 across Europe, The simExchange analyst Jesse Divnich believes a similar move in the US is the company's "only feasible and economic option" to combat Sony's PlayStation 3 momentum.
"Whether there is an Xbox 360 shortage or not, it is clear that the PS3 has gained considerable ground on its rival," he said, as the impact of last year's PS3 price cut and Sony's Blu-ray victory become clear. "Given these past two months and the momentum that the PS3 has gained, Microsoft must react quickly as the PS3's momentum will only get stronger until Microsoft reacts."
Microsoft Explains 360 Supply Flub
>> From next-gen.biz:
Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg said that Microsoft's "number jocks" assumed that everyone who would typically buy an Xbox 360 in November and December would instead buy it in September or October after the September launch of Halo 3.
"We were wrong. What happened was the normal seasonality. November was twice the size of October and December was twice the size of November," Greenberg said. "What happened with the Halo phenomenon was just truly incremental on top of the normal holiday cycle. "...Even at the speed we're running at, it can take a couple of months to react to that."
Greenberg said that Microsoft is currently airshipping Xbox 360 hardware into the market, a practice not typical in normal supply situations.
Microsoft's Take on the February NPD Numbers
>> From gamerscoreblog.com (MS's Xbox PR Blog):
For February's NPD reporting period, Xbox 360 remained in a supply constrained situation. The situation is improving and we are confident consumers will soon be able to find the Xbox 360 SKU they seek, in time for the launch of "Grand Theft Auto IV", which we expect to be one of the biggest titles of the year with huge impact on the Xbox 360 platform.
What makes a winning platform? It's more than console sales. It's about consoles + content + community.
As you do your reporting this month we thought we'd provide you with what we believe is a complete picture of a healthy console ecosystem, and how Xbox 360 is contributing:
Consoles: * $332 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform this month, capturing 39 percent of the generation's ecosystem, $235 million was spent on the PS3 and $283 million was spent on the Wii. (February NPD data) * The Xbox 360 platform now has a U.S. installed base of 9.6 million; the PS3 has 3.8 million, the Wii has 8.1 million. (February NPD data) * February NPD data shows a new Xbox 360 software attach rate of 7.2, nearly twice that of the PS3 or the Wii. (February NPD data) * 255,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold during the month of February. (February NPD data)
Content: * Xbox 360 leads in games, with six out of the top 10 best selling console games in February. (February NPD data) * Xbox 360 "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" (Activision) was the best-selling console game across all platforms, outselling the PlayStation 3 version by 2:1. (February NPD data) * Xbox 360 has the top selling games on its platform. According to February NPD, Xbox 360 sold $184 million in games, with PS3 selling $97 million and Wii $130 million. * Third party partners find more success on Xbox 360. In February, Xbox 360 accounted for $159 million of all third party game sales this generation, or 45 percent of share. (February NPD data) * Xbox 360 has more games available than any other platform, and more than twice the games available on PS3. (February NPD data)
Community: * Xbox LIVE is the largest online gaming community currently over 10 million strong worldwide, and growing. The PS3 online network is only 2.9 million (U.S. data only) and the Wii has only four million (this number includes North America and Japan). (Microsoft internal estimates) * Xbox LIVE is opening doors to help turn its 10 million gamers into developers. Last month, Xbox 360 announced community games for Xbox LIVE and will be widely available this fall. * Today, we are announcing Xbox LIVE experienced 750,000 downloads of seven new community games on Xbox LIVE. They were made available for free, for less than a week. (Microsoft internal estimates)
When you look at lifetime performance of all three consoles, Xbox 360 continues to lead:
Lifetime Ecosystem Performance (US NPD Data): * To date, $9.0 billion have been spent on Xbox 360 in the U.S, which is more than the competition's retail dollars combined. This is nearly $6 billion more than consumers have spent on PS3 and approximately $4.5 billion more than Wii. * Third party publishers make 60 percent of their revenue at retail on the Xbox 360 platform this generation.
Xbox 360: Extending the Lead * Xbox 360 has six of the top 10 best games, ranked by quality. (Metacritic) * No other game platform delivers downloadable digital entertainment, with family favorites like "Hannah Montana" and "Lost." * No other platform delivers interactive online experiences to more than 10 million members around the globe.
Now that you've seen the gaming ecosystem from a different perspective, we look forward to hearing your thoughts.
p.s. In case you were wondering, Microsoft is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Disc Association regarding integrating Blu-ray in to the Xbox 360 experience. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest and best library of blockbuster games available.
Lewis: 360 cuts will 'open mass-market floodgates'
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Lewis, newly promoted to full oversight of Microsoft's entertainment business in Europe, said: "There are some sweet spots of pricing, particularly in parts of Europe, that do genuinely open up larger communities to the console and certainly Euro 199 is one of those pricepoints. It's a perfect time to open up the mass-market floodgates."
Coming in the wake of the demise of the Microsoft-backed HD DVD format, the price reductions are also designed to counter increasing Sony momentum, which saw SCEE president David Reeves boast earlier this year that PS3 had already overtaken 360's installed base in Italy, Spain, France and Germany, despite 360's head start.
"On a general level I certainly wouldn't trade places with any other platform holder right now," insisted Lewis. "Yes, I acknowledge that we're not where we should be in certain parts of the geography. We aim to rectify that and this step is a key stage towards it. You will see others, they will be significant," he added.
Xbox games library to hit 1000 this summer
>> From mcvuk.com:
Xbox's quest to become the console of choice for families will be given a huge boost by becoming the first system to offer a library of 1,000 games this summer.
That's according to Xbox VP for Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe Chris Lewis, who this week told MCV that Xbox Live will be a key weapon in tempting mainstream consumers away from PS3 and Nintendo's Wii in the coming months. "We'll have north of 1,000 games on 360 by the summer, across Live and boxed product," VP of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe Chris Lewis told MCV. "Titles such as our sports games, Scene It! and Guitar Hero - which has become a preferential experience on Xbox 360 - has already proved that, and we have lot more coming in that space this year. Toshiba faces 986usd mln loss on HD DVDs

One XBLA fix down, one (of many) to go
>> From gamespot.com:
Probably the most desired fix for the 360's vocal group of achievement whores was the ability to exclude game trials from your recently played list as well as your achievement potential. Maybe it's been officially announced at some point, but for the past couple of weeks I've noticed that playing trials no longer places those games on my game list. Microsoft Expecting Low 360 US Sales In Feb, March
>> From kotaku.com:
In January, the PS3 outsold the 360, and the sky proceeded to fall in (at least, it did for 360 fanboys). Will the same thing happen in February? Probably, if comments today by Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg are anything to go by. Speaking with Reuters about their current sales and supply situation, Greenberg said:
"We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints. By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation."
Microsoft Unsuccessful At Immersion Lawyer Block
>> From gamasutra.com:
When Immersion sued both Microsoft and Sony for patent infringement in 2002, part of Microsoft's $26 million settlement agreement with the company reportedly stipulated that it would be entitled to a payment in the event that Immersion reached a settlement with Sony as well.
Sony did reach a settlement with Immersion in March 2007, and apparently Microsoft has not received a payment because Immersion never called its agreement with Sony a "settlement." According to a Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter, Microsoft and Immersion are back in court over this latest dispute, with Microsoft aiming to block law firm Irell and Manella from representing Immersion in the case.
Judge Ricardo Martinez refused the motion, however, to disqualify all of the firm's attorneys, since not all of them were individually involved in the case with Sony, and determined that Irell & Manella could represent Immersion so long as the attorneys arguing the case were separate from those who might be required to act as witnesses. NPD: Hardcore Gamers Spend More on Non-Gaming Entertainment
>> From gamedaily.com:
The NPD Group has released new data from its "Entertainment Trends in America" report, which the firm plans to make available to clients later this spring. According to the data based on a sample of more than 10,000 U.S. consumers, while the video game industry saw retail revenue triple in growth in 2007, hardcore gamers (defined as those who played video games daily or several times each week) actually spent most of their entertainment budgets on non-gaming entertainment.
"These consumers remain more likely to buy a DVD or CD, than they are to purchase a new video game. In fact, 58 percent had purchased a new DVD in the past six months, 46 percent bought a CD, and 43 percent purchased a game for a console," NPD stated.
Xbox 360 already dead in Japan?
>> From thatvideogameblog.com:
A recent article quoted Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter as saying, "PS3 will likely outsell the 360 in Europe by 20-40 percent, and will kill 360 in Japan" in late 2008. As if it's been enjoying a life of luxury in the land of the rising sun the headline read, "PS3 will kill 360 in Japan" by year's end. This struck me as misleading because the 360 has essentially never been "alive" in Japan to begin with. I think what Pachter meant was that the PlayStation 3 would "kill the Xbox 360″ in sales figures. In fact, Xbox 360's death in Japan has been widely known to the Japanese as soon as it hit the street.
Vgcharts.org shows that to date, sales figures in Japan indicate .59 million units for the Xbox 360, 1.97 million units for the PlayStation 3, and 5.5 million units for the Wii.
If that's not dead, I don't know what is. I think even Toshiba would have given up this particular battle by now. It was reported that Microsoft really made a strong attempt at winning over a Japanese market share with the Xbox 360 and yet they have failed horribly for a second time. Maybe Microsoft will throw in the towel and Japan will never see an Xbox 720? What do you think? Does the Japanese market matter? Is there a compelling reason for Microsoft to continue releasing their products there?
Arstechnica: Apple TV vs. the Xbox 360
>> From arstechnica.com:
Previously, I looked at the Apple TV in isolation, to see how it fits as a digital hub. Apple isn't the only company that wants to have its device at the center of your home entertainment though, nor the only ones who want its storefront to be the one you use to download TV and movies. So in this next installment, I shall compare the Apple TV to what I think will be its closest rival, the Microsoft Xbox 360. Yes, you read that right. I am going to compare a game console with the Apple TV, but the comparison is not as far fetched as you might think. Both have storefronts where you can download TV episodes and movies. Both will rent you content in both HD and SD, and both will let you stream your own media through them to your TV and speakers.
Why the Apple TV is better: * Cheaper than the Xbox 360 * Cheaper HD rentals * Less restrictive licensing * Build quality * Better integration with the iTunes store * Silent running * Small form factor
Why the Xbox 360 is better: * Lots of features when combined with Vista Windows Media Center * Better picture quality (at the expense of file size) * Plays games * DVD drive (and the option of HD DVD) * Includes cables
(February) Pachter: PS3 Tops 360 - simExchange: 360 Tops PS3
>> From next-gen.biz:
Ahead of the release of NPD's February sales results, The simExchange forecast in a Monday note that Xbox 360 will once again top the PS3. The firm expects the Nintendo Wii and DS to sell 450,000 units in the US each, with Xbox 360 selling 285,000 and PS3 selling 270,000. The firm expects the Nintendo Wii and DS to sell 450,000 units in the US each, with Xbox 360 selling 285,000 and PS3 selling 270,000. PSP is expected to sell 259,000.
Pachter said in a Monday investor note that he expects PS3 to sell 260,000, with Xbox 360 selling 250,000 units. He estimated that Wii sales would reach 300,000, considerably lower than The simExchange's prediction market estimate of 450,000 units.
Will Microsoft drop Xbox 360 price in US?
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
With the recently-announced Xbox 360 price cuts in Europe, a US price drop may not be far behind according to some analysts.
"Due to the amount of software available and the performance of Xbox Live, I think that the 360 will hold its own until the holidays, then I think that PS3 sales will pick up dramatically - because of Blu-ray and sales of HD monitors." Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz. "So I expect a 360 price cut before Xmas, perhaps to USD 299 for the premium model. If Sony cuts the price before then, I expect Microsoft to cut to at least USD 50 below the price of the PS3."
"We believe price cuts are also likely in North America on the Xbox 360, possibly combined with the long anticipated announcement of a new hardware sku with a larger hard drive," Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Lazard Capital Markets, told GamesIndustry.biz.
Pachter: EU 360 price cut to boost sales 20 per cent
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Following Microsoft's decision to drop the price of the Xbox 360 in Europe, analyst Michael Pachter has told GamesIndustry.biz that he expects sales to increase by around 20 per cent over the coming months.
However, in the long term, he doesn't see it making a larger impact to Microsoft's standing in the region, as Sony is also likely to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 at some point later this year.
He also echoed comments made to GamesIndustry.biz by The simExchange's Jesse Divnich, that the timing of Microsoft's price cut is partly due to the failure of the HD-DVD format, and consumer perception that the PlayStation 3 now seems a better value machine with its integrated Blu-ray technology.
