360 Flash Dump Tool v0.4
>> Robinsod released a new version of the 360 Flash Dump Tool(info) - a developers tool that will allow you to decrypt and extract various parts of a Xbox360 flash dump.
What's new/fixed (since v0.2)
* Fixed CG extraction (see NAND Layout thread for info)
* Reverted CE.cab to single file (thanks Takires)
* As TheSpecialist said extraction of CE section is now working, and what a pig it was Wink, you may now right click and select 'Extract' and get just the raw, decrypted CE Section or Kernel(s). Selecting Kernel(s) causes the application to extract the base (typically 1888) HV and Kernel as an uncompressed file - "xboxkrnl.1888.exe". The option to extract them as a .cab file has now been removed. If 1 or both of the patch (CF/CG) slots are occupied they will be applied to the base kernel and the result is also written as a file - xboxkrnl.XXXX.exe.
For example, if you have a base kernel (1888) and 2 patches (2858 and 4552) in your flash dump, load into the tool, right click on CE and choose kernel(s) you will get 3 files:
- xboxkrnl.1888.exe The base HV & kernel, no patches
- xboxkrnl.2858.exe The base HV & kernel, patched to 2858
- xboxkrnl.4552.exe The base HV & kernel, patched to 4552
* I noticed an odd bug in the the upgrade process while developing this tool. I have some dumps from a box where 4532 is upgraded to 4548. As I noted the other day the first 0xBB40 bytes of CG are stored immediately after CF and the remainder is stored in FS blocks (there's a list in the CF header and they also appear in the FS as sysupdate.xexp files). Well it appears during the update process from 4532 to 4548 the CG data for 4532 was deleted but the list in CF is still valid. This is odd since 4548 was not a lock down version was it? Yet it would be impossible to roll back from a corrupt 4548 to 4532
* Its very interesting to diff. 4548 and 4552 they have << 100 bytes of differences so I guess the exploit fix was pretty small Wink

Team Blackbolt News Update: MC360, THR33 and eX Skins
>> From Team Blackbolt :
Hi Guys, Blackbolt here. I'm just popping in to inform everyone of the plans that I hope to adere to this year leading up to the holiday period. First of all concerning MC360 and website downloads. Pretty soon we will be moving to a more simplified way of delivering MC360 and other skins to you alot quicker than the way we have it now, whether that means having download links directly on our homepage, or another system, I want to make them more accessable. Also XBMC Live Place will be streamlined into the MC360 section and no longer have its own space in the downloads section.

Regarding MC360, the SVN is the best place to download the latest version. Towards the end of this week, we will release 1.05 which will include the current SVN tree, this is likely to be the last 'version' numbered release of MC360. Everything will be based on SVN numbers from the official XBMC Skinning SVN where MC360 now recides.

I myself, will be returning to skin in the fall, specifically September/October. I plan to finish 'eX' and have that ready before Christmas. I would also like to get the 'THR33' Skin release before Christmas, but we will have to see how things pan out. I look forward to returning to skinning after having some time away from it and I hope that the forums will perk up again with chatter about our new skins.

iXtreme firmware 1.2 for TS-H943 Xbox 360
>> A new firmware replacement for the TS-H943 xbox360 drive..
Features:
(v1.2) Extra verification performed on Stealth backups

Note: The extra features added in both 1.1(not public) and 1.2 release are directly related to security. A security-hole was found after 1.1, which lead to the jump in version numbers. We prefer to keep specific details private, but in general there is extra verfication between SS/DMI/PFI in stealth backups.

Those whom were using a TS-H943 in replacement of a original hitachi drive, and were having issues copying the key, should no longer have such issues. The included samtool has been updated to v0.7i (thanks caster420!!)

We strongly advise that you upgrade from 1.0 to 1.2 in the near future for the safety of your xblive account. Currently, 1.0 is safe, but in the future there will undoubtably be new checks that 1.2 addresses!
As always...
Use on Xbox Live at own risk!! (And please do not alter game content on xbox live, as that is the sole reason MS is motivated to ban backups on live!!!)

Also, please note that included is a version ixtr12-i.bin which is strictly for Windows/Linux testing ONLY. Do *NOT* flash the -inq version to your drive. The Hitachi Version of iXtreme is currently a Work In Progress. There is no ETA, so i would give it several weeks before any public progress report.

Here are the definitions update for iPrep 101(info) to include iXtreme 1.2 (extract file to your iPrep install directory)

Help nominate XBMC for SourceForge.net 2007 Community Choice Awards
>> From Team-XBMC:
It is almost time for this years SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards (CCA). This is the second annual SourceForge CCA, last year the XBMC (Xbox Media Center) project won two categories; "best multimedia project" and "best game project". If you are a registered user on SourceForge.net (registration is free) then you can help to make sure that the XBMC project is eligible for this years CCA as well by nominating the XBMC project to one or more categories. Later, once all final nominees been decided then everyone will be able to vote for the OSD (Open Source Development) projects of their choice in each category. This year Team-XBMC hope that you will help us be nominated in at least the "Multimedia" category, and maybe the "Best Project" category as well, (as it is possible to be nominated in more than one category). The prize: 'bragging rights' and the SourceForge.net CCA logo on the SourceForge.net XBMC project page.

Registered SourceForge.net users can submit your nomination for the XBMC project here (link)
(You can revisit the link to nominate the XBMC project in more than one category if you wish)

Talismoon tiltBoard 360 Details Released
>> It was already announced a while ago that Talismoon would produce an Xbox360 motion sensitive controller addon with Adam Thole. More details about the upcoming device have now been released in the official press release:
At long last it's time for Xbox 360 owners to feel the benefits of tilt sensation, something of which PS3 owners have been privileged to since its inception. Moreover, the Nintendo Wii is a prime example of just how instrumental interactive controllers can be in providing a highly enjoyable gaming experience.
Talismoon is delighted to the release the second generation of its tiltBoard controller, featuring a high quality design sporting powerful features which are easier to use than even PS3's SIXAXIS controller.

Talismoon's tiltBoard sports a unique u-shaped board that puts the two tiltBoard control buttons within easy reach of gamers fingers. This gives gamers the ability to make on the fly tilt adjustments in-game, as needed.
Talismoon tiltBoard 360

The Tiltboard comes pre-loaded with tilTune technology, which is the most user friendly firmware available for such a device. Gamers have the ability to perform the following functions, in game:
1. Adjust the tilt sensitivity: useful for getting accustomed to tilt control.
2. Adjust the 0 degree point: to allow holding the controller at the most comfortable angle
3. Invert the Y axis: to add realism to flying games
4. Turn the tilt function on and off

Everything required to enjoy the latest sensation in console gaming on Xbox 360 comes in a convenient package and requires only seven wires to solder.
This product is currently schedule to ship during the second half of June 2007.
More details about the device from Adam Thole himself:
The Talismoon tiltBoard 360 has a unique PCB that allows itself to be mounted on the inside of an Xbox 360 Controller. It has two buttons, both of which are easily accessible on the outside of the controller (without removing any batteries). One button is dedicated to the tiltTune technology and the other button switches between the analog stick or tilt for input to the controller and allows the user to invert the y-axis of either. A normal press of the button will flip between the analog stick and the tilt for input. A long press (greater than one second) will invert the y-axis of whatever is currently active (either the analog stick or the tilt input). Another long press will return it to it's original state.

Microsoft Responds EU: Blame Users for Scratched Discs
>> The European Commissioner for Consumers asked Microsoft about disc scratching issues last week, and here's what MS answered:
In a statement, Microsoft told MCV that it has responded to Kuneva - and that faulty discs are likely to have been caused by 'improper use' of the console.

It said: "There has been correspondence between Commissioner Kuneva's cabinet and Microsoft's Belgian offices.
"We are working in an open dialogue to help explain our position and all the efforts we are taking across the EU to address any concerns that our consumers may have.
"If used properly, Xbox 360 consoles do not damage discs... there is no single root cause or systemic issue with any of the Xbox 360 consoles."

Console 'sweet spot' is 199usd, says Microsoft
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
As Microsoft reveals intentions to target families with new titles and a renewed marketing push, group product manager David Hufford has said he's well aware that USD 199 is the ideal price for the family audience.
Although the company has avoided a significant price reduction of the Xbox 360 since release in late 2005, analysts and industry watchers expect a cut in time for the Christmas period.

It's not only price where Microsoft intends to follow its rival's lead. Targeting the family group with new titles and a renewed marketing push is another priority, as it hopes to shake off the 'hardcore' tag that held back sales of the original Xbox.
"If we don't make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1, a solid business with 25 million people," commented Xbox boss Peter Moore.
"What I need is a solid business with 90 million people."

Xecuter X79 Mod for the Hitachi 079
>> From Team Xecuter:
Unusual request but we require Hitachi 079 Firmware dumps. If you have one could you please send it to admin /AT/ team-xecuter.com
As far as we know there are 4 different firmwares where the drive key starts at: 4B00, 4C30, 4D20 and 4E10
We have the 4B00 but need the others - many thanks

I've just been hit with about 200 emails asking why we want the Hitachi 079 firmwares lol
Well first stop sending emails if you are not sending me the firmware - thanks

OK, well we have made a mod that completely converts the Hitachi 079 drive so that it switches to modeb (no SLAX needed) and all read / write capabilities are operational in Windows using Maximus Toolbox etc (Hopefully Maximus will now add USB support to his app for the 078 / 079 drives now as that would be perfect). This mod does NOT hack the drive so you can boot backups. We feel that any kind of hardware mod to do that is a waste of time now so it is best to update to the latest firmwares via flashing - which you currently cannot do with the Hitachi 079 (until now of course)

We are missing a couple of firmwares, but as soon as we get those will only take a few hours to finish and the mod will be ready to ship (we used the same design as our old X78 mod however that never shipped as there wasn't much point in the end).
Xecuter X79 Mod

Thanks goto Gary OPA, C4EVA & Maximus for their efforts and contributions.

Console Price Cuts: The Evidence
>> From next-gen.biz:
Next-Gen burrows through the archives of history to figure out how and when hardware manufacturers drop their prices. Click through for graphs, stats and facts galore. Conclusion - we're due a price cut...

For all the talk of Sony dropping its price, it is Microsoft that appears to have the impending date with destiny. In fact, if Microsoft doesn't drop its price by the end of July 2007, it will have held the line on its pricing longer than the PlayStation 2 did last generation.

How did price drops happen last generation? Both the GameCube and the Xbox had quick price drops after six months (from $200 to $150 and $300 to $200 respectively) and the PlayStation 2 lasted 19 months before it dropped from $300 to $200. You might recall that all three of those price drops came in the same month: May 2002. It is also worth noting that by the end of 3.5 years on the market all three consoles had settled in at 50% of their launch prices.

Xecuter Blaster360 Hitachi-LG 046/047 Fix PCB
>> We saw this news at one wholesaler:
We have received a new batch of Blaster 360 from Team Xecuter that now comes with a special PCB called the Hitachi Fix.
We found a bit more info about this issue on the team xecuter forums:
There were quite a few issues with some of the older Hitachi 046 and 047 DVD units when used with the Blaster 360 and we have spent a great deal of time investigating the cause.

For those that have issues we have designed an immediate fix which requires a tiny amount of easy soldering to solve the poor latency of these Hitachi drives. You also have to cut the two traces between the two soldering points - its not difficult and easily reverible if you ever need to.

Its simply adding 2 x missing 10nf capacitors to the DVD drive circuit board (as seen in the pictures)
Xecuter Blaster360 Hitachi 046/047 Fix PCB
Xecuter Blaster360 Hitachi 046/047 Fix PCB

We will be providing these PCB's free of charge for resellers to ship to customers who wish to try this solution to fix their problems (non booting, E64 etc). Shipping of the PCB fixes has started to all resellers. Here are some pictures, we will post install instructions when the fix is available to ship.

Opportunities abound in nex-gen gaming platforms
>> From techonline.com:
The next round of game-platform redesigns may still be four to five years out, but chip and software designers in the areas of wireless, microeletromechanical systems, displays, miniature cameras, sensors, actuators and storage have an opportunity to be part of those multi-100-million shipments as platforms respond faster to user demands by converging on interactivity, connectivity and information display.

The Ataris debuted in a different era, at a time of no competition and little pressure from users. That led to a design that was geared more toward cosmetics. "Back then they didn't have to focus on margins and how they can save: it just had to look cool," said Quirk. "Now we design more for cost, heat [management], cooling and [efficient] test." Atari also made a profit on the platform, versus the games. That model has since been inverted, with only Nintendo now managing to scratch out a small profit from the platform, the rest--Sony and Microsoft--make their money on the aftermarket games, said Quirk.

SI expected the current crop of designs to incorporate 65-nm process technologies, down from 90 nm, but that didn't happen, so Quirk believes that'll be coming soon from Sony and Microsoft as part of their cost-reduction strategy. That need for cost-reduction was the main impetus behind the Sony/Toshiba/IBM and Nintendo/IBM/ATI/Chartered partnerships, and while SI expects those partnerships to remain intact going forward, part of the strategy for future cost reductions will be the evaluation of second- and third-tier chip and software vendors as they jockey for a socket in the next round of platform designs.
"There's a lot more competition," said Quirk. "Everyone wants to get designed into them. With volumes in the hundreds of millions, a design win for of these gaming platforms is huge, both from a press and revenue point of view."

No Final Fantasy For Xbox 360
>> From xbox360.ign.com:
Looking for more Final Fantasy following the Xbox 360 port of Final Fantasy XI? Then you're going to have to look to a different next generation system. A Square Enix executive has disclosed to Japan's Nikkei BP that the company currently has no plans for Final Fantasy games on the 360.

Noting that the PS3 is getting Final Fantasy XIII, the website asked Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto if the Wii or Xbox 360 will also be getting games in the series. "For the Wii, we have FF Crystal Chronicles in production," replied Hashimoto. "As for FF on the Xbox 360, it's currently a completely blank page."

Xtreme Boot Maker v0.5.4 Pulled
>> From Klutsh on x-projects.org:
Xtreme Boot Maker(info)(info) 0.5.4 has been dropped.
Stoner who took over from 0.5.3 has tried to take XBM in a direction that was never intended.
I did not realize that Stoner altered the Samtool executable (without permission) and released it for public use.
DO NOT USE XBM 0.5.4 it may destroy your 360's drive.

I apologize for this error in judgment on my part, from now I will be the sole developer of XBM, working in conjunction the Caster420 and the Xtreme firmware team, to bring you stable and tested applications.

Releases of XBM can be trusted from here, Xbox-Scene and 360mods.net.
If you see mention of 360hax anywhere in any future release it was not done by X-Projects and should be treated with caution.

Update:
The majority of 0.5.4 is ok to use.
Please do not use the advanced restore feature, this is where the only problem lies.

Microsoft Launches Ignition Program to Help Recording Artists
>> Already kinda announced yesterday, but here's the official press release:
Microsoft Corp. today announced the launch of Ignition, a new program that gives recording artists with new releases a unique channel to reach tens of millions of consumers, whether they are browsing music online, playing games or catching up on the latest news. For the first time, Microsoft has packaged promotional opportunities across Zune, Xbox and MSN to help artists more efficiently reach consumers in all three audiences.

In a world where high-impact promotional opportunities for new music can be limited, artists look for ways to make direct connections with their audience and leave a lasting impression. Ignition maximizes exposure for artists by engaging consumers with interesting content and reaching them frequently over a monthlong period through prominent placement on Zune Marketplace, Zune.net, MSN entertainment properties and the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. For consumers, Ignition provides a steady stream of new music through online access to exclusive content, free song and video downloads, streaming video, editorial features, and artist playlists.

"The Ignition program is designed to help artists connect with a substantial consumer audience," said Christina Calio, director of Music Marketing for Zune. "Consumers are looking for ways to find new music, and Ignition helps connect artists with potential new fans by giving them multiple opportunities to listen to, watch or read about the artist across Microsoft's online platforms."

The Ignition program launches with the U.K. band Maxïmo Park (Warp Records/Caroline Distribution), whose current album, "Our Earthly Pleasures," debuted at No. 2 on the U.K. charts in April and is receiving significant radio airplay for its single "Girls Who Play Guitars." Throughout the month of June, Ignition will introduce new U.S. fans to this popular U.K. band through free and exclusive music downloads and features on Zune Marketplace and Zune.net, video downloads on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and promotional video and music streams on MSN Video and MSN Music.

* added: busydialogdelay option in advancedsettings to set the delay in milliseconds before the busydialog pops up. <busydialogdelay>2000</busydialogdelay>
* I made this build yesterday so build date will say 3rd, but no changes has been made to SVN since, so enjoy this new T3CH.
* For the first time I've removed a script. Snake was removed because it stopped functioning. If the author fixes bugs and add builtin update functionality, I might readd it in future.
* I'm including the XBMC Win32 PC environment.exe that is meant for skinners & python developers, read more about the concept here. It was built using Microsoft DirectX Summer 2004 SDK.
* I've tweaked the win32 run_me_first.bat so it runs and then unmounts the virtual drives when you exit.

Keep in mind this is a SVN snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

Gates Hints At New Xbox Control System
>> From gamasutra.com:
As detailed by technology website All Things Digital, Gates was taking part in a live conversation with Apple founder Steve Jobs, when Gates began to discuss the use of 3D online interfaces and the increasing role of the PC as a home media and communications center.

He ended his comments by saying, "And as we get natural input, that will cause a change... Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you're just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it."
As the similarities behind his concept and that of the Wii were pointed out, Gates responded: "No, that's not it. You can't pick up your tennis racket. And swing it."
"You can't sit there with your friends and do those natural things. That's a 3D positional device. This is video recognition," he added.

Microsoft Ignition to Unite Xbox, Zune, MSN for New Music
>> From .dmwmedia.com:
Combining an audience of approximately 30 million regular users, Microsoft's Ignition program, to be announced tomorrow, will leverage three of its largest services - Xbox Live, Zune, and MSN - to offer customers new music acts. The Ignition program will expose emerging artists to the broad Microsoft audience for a month, with the first participating band being Maximo Park from the UK. The band's first single will be offered as a free exclusive download on Zune, a free music video for download on Xbox Live, and as a streaming video on MSN.

According to Reuters, Microsoft is "demanding exclusive content and hands-on participation from the artists involved." Christina Calio, Microsoft's director of music marketing, said, "We don't want the same thing that is going out on MTV."

Ignition's success will depend in large part on the quality of the acts it promotes. Microsoft is hoping to be a filter for its audience, something MySpace, for instance, currently lacks.
But it's the lack of a filter that many MySpace users enjoy. The ability to "discover" music and recommend it to friends is one of the success stories of the online social networking movement. Microsoft is, in essence, attempting to modernize the MTV model and distribute it over a range of services with which few companies can compete.

XDVDMulleter Beta 8
>> Badsheepy released a new version of XDVDMulleter(info), an ISO extraction/creation/rebuilding tool for Xbox and Xbox360 discs with several features making it useful for more precise dumps as required by xtreme firmwares:
It is mainly just a quick release for stealth checking.
An extra option works now!: batch extraction. not well tested. But working.

XDVDMulleter will check every aspect of stealth on a disc and warn you of any difficulties.
To load from dvdr: on the loading screen, just select the dvdr tab and ensure raw mode reading is selected.

Stealth Checks:
* Checks PFI for valid data
* Checks PFI is a known pfi sector
* Checks video matches PFI data
* Checks Video is a known video partition
* Checks 2nd layer of video to check splitvid
* Checks DMI for 'XBOX' string (xbox 360 only)
* Checks SS matchs default.xex (xbox 360 only)
* Checks SS file for invalid hitachi SS

Changes:
* Deletes all temp files upon end
* Bug opening dvds in raw mode fixed (I cant remember what bug though..)
* Shrink page reset each time, so no longer messes up on multiple isos
* Shrink page acts on a (virtual) copy of ISO, so back works properly
* XBE checking page doesnt recheck once its been done once
* Shrink page no longer auto crosslinks (because testing with gow took 20 minutes just for this step.. damn)
* Checks to see if video partition is empty but present
* Checks link between SS and default.xex to ensure you have the right SS file for the release
* Hardcoded iso values removed, instead offsets calculated from SS + PFI
* Inserts video directly into iso if partition exists (previously created new iso)
* Checks all files you insert into ISOs
* Extra stealth checking stuff i have forgotten about
* Log file logs actions for debugging etc
* Quick bugfix so unsplit Xbox1 Video files dont give split video error
* Extract is back, extract and replace files in an iso
* Batch extraction over FTP or to filesystem

Source is included, but dont expect anything pretty :-)
Thanks to all the people who tested, reported bugs, and sent feedback. Suggestions, bugs etc are still welcome :-)
