Distributed computing attack on the Xbox public key *updated*
>> It looks like the guys at The Neo Project will try to find the Xbox private key with distributed bruteforce so it will be possible to sign homebrew utils so they boot on a non-modded xbox. (xbox-linux contest part2)
Althought chances that the key will be found this way in the next few years are near 0 , it is possible ... it's all a matter of chance actually & how many computers participate.

From theneoproject.com:
You can download Neo 1.0.600 and start working on the Xbox challenge.
We do not know if it is legal or not to participate in the Xbox challenge, we are looking for some legal advice as a donation to Neo. If this Xbox challenge is found illegal and/or are approached by M$, we will be ditching the Xbox project all together as we cannot afford the legal fees.
If you want to join the search , just download the program and install it. Once launched select "XBOX Public Key Challenge" at the bottom of the programwindow.
Feel free to join our team ... just fill in "Xbox-Scene.com" (without the quotes) as Team Name when you register (first time program launches).
You can change this in Settings>User Information.

Official Site: here[theneoproject.com]
Download from our mirror: mirror1 or mirror2 (our Team Name is "Xbox-Scene.com")

New game consoles in play for '03
>> hollywoodreporter.com posted a nice article about upcoming hardware releases.
The true next generation of hardware is pegged for a 2005 launch, with Microsoft planning Xbox Next and Sony planning PlayStation 3. But 2003 might see a portable take on GameCube and cheaper variations of Xbox and PlayStation 2, Envisioneering analyst Richard Doherty predicted.

Doherty expects an Xbox 1.5 that will be cheaper to manufacture and will be a smaller, lighter version of the current Xbox. He said it will retail from $129-$149. Microsoft also might introduce a new combination Xbox-digital video recorder for about $199.

Sony is on the third generation of PlayStation hardware, and the company is expected to ship its second incarnation of PS2 this year.

"I believe you'll see the price of this PS2.5 drop as low as $99," Doherty said. And Sony is a TiVo investor, which leads Doherty and others to think there's a combination TiVo-PS2 device in the works -- possibly a $149 add-on to "fit into the back bay of the PS2," Doherty said.

Little is known about Xbox Next, other than that it will ship before PS3 and likely will include UltimateTV technology (DVR and TV Web surfing), and it could serve as a PC for the living room.

Work In Progress: FBAx b3
>> From lantus-x.com/FBAx/:
No i havent forgotten FBAx - heres a nice tidbit for FBAx fans for the new year, ive managed to merge in the new FBA v0.2.9.4 win32 sources into the Xbox code - so you will be getting the new drivers when B3 comes around.

as well as this - when i make a new compile i fired up FBAx to test out some of the new Cave driver roms and i realised quickly in hindsight our button mapping are pretty poor and could use some work. I couldnt remember a single button mapping without resorting to the code/docs. So most likely what i will be doing is providing a menu system similar to xSnes9x to make life easier.

there is no eta on b3 at this stage. more news as it happens.

Xbox Linux $100,000 award by Michael Robertson (Lindows OS)
>> From xbox-linux.sourceforge.net:
In an effort to speed up the work needed to bring Linux to the Microsoft Xbox, an anonymous donor offered two prizes (part A and part B) of $100,000 each last year.

Both before and after the prize was announced many people from around the world were working hard. The free OS Linux has been successfully brought to the Microsoft device, and its users are now able to choose from a huge selection of free Linux applications. These include Home Entertainment, Internet and Office programs. Xbox Linux is available to anyone as a free download from http://xbox-linux.sf.net
The deadline for the prizes has arrived.

* Part A involved running Linux on the box, and this has been successfully completed.
* Part B involved running Linux on an Xbox with no hardware modifications, which has not been acheived yet.

The donor can now be revealed as Michael Robertson, who is the man behind the Lindows OS - which you may have heard recently had some conflict with Microsoft. We are grateful for his contribution in speeding up the goals of the whole group.

Distribution of the monies to several hackers for part A is expected to be completed by the end of January.

Michael Robertson has decided to extend the deadline for part B for another year. We are already preparing new open analysis tools. Any experienced hacker is welcome to join the effort. The updated rules for this extended part will also be available on the Xbox Linux website at the end of January.

ConfigMagic Beta 2 Released
>> Team Assembly brings us ConfigMagic Beta 2 :-)
We just Released Beta 2 of ConfigMagic.. and as you can see the biggest thing in this release is V1.1 support..

NEW FEATURES & FIXES:
* XBOX V1.1 Support added !!!
* We no longer have ANY need to supply the eeprom RC4 key with #define, we "look" for the RC4 key elsewhere during runtime :)
* When the HDD is Locked, a Master password of TEAMASSEMBLY is used, so if you screw up you can recover your hdd !!
* Corrected a speling mistake in the .cfg file.. was "VideMode", corrected to "VideoMode"
* Now mostly using JPG images to save a little on the footprint..

CURRENT FEATURES: (V1.0 AND V1.1)
* You can update your XBOX EEPROM in one of three ways
- Using a valid EEPROM.BIN file
- You can "build" a new eeprom image from a configuration file
- Edit your current, loaded (.bin) or built (.cfg) eeprom data "On-The-Fly"
* You Can Lock and Unlock your HDD with the password created from your XBOX EEPROM
* You can create backup of your current eeprom, HDD password and various other settings.
* Security features will not allow a "bad" eeprom update, or update eeprom if HDD is still locked..

FUTURE FEATURES:
* Support to Live Edit Confounder
* Add some background Music
* support for converting V1.0 eeprom images to v1.1 and vice versa..
* Dumping current configuration to a Text file
* Save current configuration as a .CFG file..
