Gentoox Loader v5.3
>> ShALLaX released another update of Gentoox Loader(info) on gentoox.shallax.com:
CD flashing? Why not! dmp and I spent a couple of hours debugging the iso9660 driver in Cromwell(info) and fixed it to allow flashing from CD! Many thanks to him! Now for the boring stuff... Your BIOS must be on CD (duh) named "image.bin" - it can be of any size but must be divisible by 256 (e.g. 256K, 512K, 768K, 1024K...). This has been tested with a 256K BIOS and a 1024K BIOS on an X2Pro. See the manual and previous post for disclaimers. To summarise: I will not be held accountable for bad flashes or misuse of this programme. Run magic to update gentoox.xbe on your E: drive.
Xodus Announces Winners Of The French Pen PR Competition
>> From TeamXodus.com:
We are proud to announce the winners of our French Pen PR competition. Today, there is no hype or banter as the winning entries speak for themselves. All we will say is that the title, “12 (twelve) reasons why Xenium is the Best” seemed to pose no problem at all to the many entrants we judged. It is truly a powerful and positive reflection on our multi-faceted product and our multi talented supporter base that so many quality entries were submitted. Well done! We had debated whether 12 different reasons why our product, team and supporter base were the best, would be manageable and we had thought of asking for only three or five reasons but we are glad we did not do that as that would have been way too simple for Xenium supporters :) After pouring through the entries we finally settled on three finalists. The overall winner, Rabid 1 takes centre stage today. You can read the other finalist entries by Dimitri and Rigoberto, and we are sure you will agree that our decision was not an easy one. The winners will be contacted individually and given the choice of the antique French Pen or a cash prize of $ 250. But enough from us, as promised, here is your new PR man Rabid 1 who has the floor. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all those who entered.
WINNING ENTRY: First a little background for you. I am a 41 year old ex-nightclub bouncer and manager. I have huge fingers and working in the dark for 12 years will certainly screw your eyesight. I got into PC and Network design because it was the only thing that didn’t bore me after I left the business. Since that has been getting a little stale I was interested in modding. After a year of reading about different chips and being told this chip is better than that chip I came across the Xenium Ice. The descriptions sounded too good to be true and the posts on TeamXodus.com were a little cocky for a newly released product. I like that! I had helped a few people install some of the “other guy’s chips” and after trying to place switches and connect programmers I was really expecting more of the same. So in September I ordered my first Xenium. Most chips talk of ease of installation but leave out the finer points of what is really entailed until you have already paid the price. My Xenium arrived and after having read the tutorials a few times before it showed up it was up and running in 10 to 15 minutes. I was shocked. At first look I was daunted by the small d0 and the LPC. But the adapter sunk right in and the d0 took just second and some common sense to rough it up for better contact, it was solder filled. The ease of install advertised was exactly what I got. I bragged it up so much I had to put my money where my mouth was and mod a couple of co-workers at the risk of my having to replace the Xbox should I screw up. Needless to say I have not yet had to cough up once. Here it is 3 months later and I just topped 30 installs, which the Xenium Ice has made so easy that I don’t charge for them. I let the word of mouth speak for itself. Almost every install has commented on the overall ease of use and user friendly interface of the OS 2.0, particularly the ex users of the “other guy’s”. They can’t believe a chip can be so easy to setup. From using the Web server to Launch or flash a bios, or flashing from USB, to the ability to play on Xbox Live without turning off or removing the chip. The HD upgrade wizard is simple and clean, being able to backup the eeprom to the chip keeps me safe from my “ooh let’s push this and see what it does” evil little inner voice, and I will put a properly installed Xenium solderless install against any solder job. Let’s not forget the support forums, where members are actually encouraged to participate and aren’t made to feel like stupid “noobs” (although in the beginning aren’t we all?). Simply asking questions on other forums left me with standard responses about “wait until you have the chip so you know what you are talking about”. Rarely did anyone take the time to try to point me in the right direction.
So let’s break some of it down - 1. Ease of Install 2. Stable and user friendly OS 3. Online Flash and Launch 4. Full networking suite 5. Region control 6. On the fly OS upgrade 7. On the fly OS recovery 8. Eeprom backup and restore 9. Xbox live support 10. Great after sale customer service 11. Seamless compatibility with mainstream bios 12. Cute little multi color LED and USB port( Hey! Even a mod chip needs a little something cute!)
So let the pretenders bring on their bells and whistles, and try to confuse us with finger pointing and blame. An engine has to run right before it’s worth painting and polishing the whole car, and so should the chip work well before it should beep, twinkle and buzz. The Xenium doesn’t just work well, it out performs the competition. I am looking forward to the day when I proudly wear the logo “Xenium Inside” on the monitor to my pacemaker. After all... Xenium Is Premium
Gentoox Loader v5.2
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
Staying up all night to release software that obsoletes a large chunk of Resctoox(info)? Yuoknowsit! I proudly present Gentoox Loader(info) v5.2 with... Net Flash (integrated flashing support over HTTP!). Many people have asked for this (namely those who get stuck with Gentoox Loader on their TSOP). Many thanks to Team Xecuter for keeping open source open and not hiding it away like so many others do! This is a direct derivative of their FlashBIOS code (which is based on the LwIP TCP/IP stack and HTTPd).
This has been tested with IE6 with an Xecuter 2.0 Pro on an Xbox v1.1 and has worked flawlessly... it has been tested, but that doesn't mean to say that it is guaranteed to work. If you don't follow the instructions carefully, you're going to run into trouble. Regardless of how well you follow the instructions, I cannot and will not be held accountable for any bad flashes that may result from using this software --- remember guarantee-wise with the GNU/GPL, you get what you pay for. I am also not responsible for how people use this software. My intention is that it will be used for easy upgrading of Gentoox Loader or for people to revert their TSOP back to their OEM BIOS.
Run "magic" now to upgrade E:gentooxx.xbe automatically. You will need to flash your modchip manually - magic wont do this for you.
With that said, enjoy. I'm going to bed. REMEMBER: Feedback!
More News Indicating Xbox2 Debut at E3, not Game Developers Conference
>> From TeamXbox.com:
During the day, Microsoft held an audio webcast with John Connors, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. During the Q&A session, an attendant asked about the next Xbox possible unveiling date and release date. John Connors said the following: "In terms on the next Xbox, we haven’t announced a release. I think the next period when Robbie and the team will talk about that is at E3 in Los Angeles in May. They’re hard at work on it, but it doesn’t have a summer announce."
From slashdot.org:
Word is now out that, in all likelyhood, all three next generation consoles will be displayed in some form at this year's e3. Nintendo's Revolution has been rumoured to be making an appearance for a while. Yesterday Sony announced the PS3 would be available in playable form at the convention, and Microsoft was soon to follow regarding the Xbox Next.
Next Xecuter Competition: 10x X3CE + XLCD + Pro-Switch
>> From TeamXecuter.com:
The competition to give away 50 X3CE Bundle packs has been an unprecedented success (X3CE + XLCD + Crystal Pro Switch) - the entries to name the top 5 reasons why Xecuter is and always has been without doubt the #1 modchip and bios producer in the Xbox Scene since its conception has attracted a staggering amount of entries. In just 9 days there have been a whopping 1,679 entries with 21,654 pageviews. The lucky winners will be announced on February 7th.
Now its time to give away the next 50 which are in hand with the admin team at Xbox-Scene.com - We had 3 new seperate competitions in mind however came up with another idea tonight as we were about to post the new and updated tutorials for step by step installation of the X2.6CE and the X3CE and also a full detailed manual (with screenshots) of the X3 1959 Bios as well as the next all new X3 Bios. However we thought we would give you the chance to maybe do something better than we can - or even make alternative manuals for our massive community to follow. Who knows there maybe some points we have missed out? So it not only helps us it helps you guys too. Let's say 10 X3CE Bundles for the following: 2 Prizes for X2.6CE Install Manual for v1.0 - v1.6b 2 Prizes for X3CE Install Manual for v1.0 - v1.6b 2 Prizes for X3 1959 Bios Full Manual 2 Prizes for X2.6CE Troubleshooting Guide 2 Prizes for X3 Troubleshooting Guide
All entries can be in pdf, htm or php format. Please post all entries to THIS THREAD
You have permission to use any information that we have posted ourselves including text and images. Closing Date will be Feb 12th. The next 40 Bundles will be offered in about a week - the competitions are directly affiliated to the new upcoming bios. X3 Control Panel Update: Will be in stock with all resellers next week - Black, Crystal & Halo Green.
Off Topic: * Had a nice email from a delusioned Xbox user - just thought i'd share his stupidity. Quote:Dear Fuckbags, I just thought I would tell you how lame your X3 chip is. I bought a Xenium and you dont need to use any clunky switches at all - and all their bios's you can download from their website - they are 100% legal - unlike your crappy illegal bios's. Once I installed the Evox Bios i was up and running. Go fuck yourselves! * Our Reply Quote:Dear Delusioned One, First of all of course you don't NEED switches with the X3 - we give you the OPTION - unlike others. Many people actually like using switches as it adds extra geek-chic to their Xbox - but of course many don't. We don't force the opinion of which system you the customer would prefer so we let you make the choice - we don't skimp on quality or components supplied. The X3 100% controls all Bios Bank / Mod Disable / Flash Protect functions without the need for the external switches - so as you can see if you had actually read our feature list before sounding off you'd know how badly mistaken you are. I also enjoyed your comments about you having fun with your easily downloadable legal bios - but them immediatley talk about installing an illegal hacked bios. Smart cookie you are.
You will never have to put out the chip for reflashing like the Aladdin, the emergency recovery system starts up if you have flashed a wrong or damaged bios. The X-Changer bios is open source under the GNU/GPL license, we will publish the source codes and hope that a lot of "freaks" will code their own updates. It's the beginning for a new kind of Xbox modchips, with their own open source community. More Pictures: * X-Changer Features Picture * X-Changer OS Screenshot1 * X-Changer OS Screenshot2
X-Changer Features: * Bootmenue * Only 1 Wire to solder (and 8 LPC Pins) * Customize your bootmenue with Skins. * Emergency Recovery System (ERS) * Quickboot function (Eject Button without opening the tray ;) * Direct Linux boot * 100% Legal (Linux based) * Easy Disc Flash Function (EDFF) * Resetproof * Stealth Mode * Works on all Xbox Versions * HDD Lock/Unlock * PAL/NTSC toggle * LED Menu * LFrame friendly (Our chip does NOT tie the LFRAME to GROUND and does NOT permanently suck current from the NVIDIA-chip on the XBOX-mainboard) * Updateable * 512 KB Flash Bios * Highspeed Xilinx CPLD The new Update OS 1.3c is now ready for download. New Features: * Improoved quick boot function: When you start your XBox with the "Eject" Button, the X-Changer boots really quick without the Bios animation. * Better XBox Version detection without the differences at the X-Changer background picture. Microsoft 2nd-Qtr Net Doubles; Xbox Turns a Profit
>> From Bloomberg.com:
Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, said second-quarter profit doubled on lower stock- based compensation costs. Sales of Windows for corporate networks and the Xbox video console beat the company's forecasts. Net income rose to $3.46 billion, or 32 cents a share, from $1.55 billion, or 14 cents, a year earlier, Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft said today in a statement. Sales rose 6.5 percent to $10.8 billion.
The unit that makes Microsoft's Xbox games was boosted by the November release of the ``Halo 2'' game. The Home and Entertainment division, on which Microsoft spent $12 billion between 2000 and 2004, earned $84 million (on revenue of $1.41 billion) compared with a loss of $397 million (on revenue of $1.27 billion) a year earlier. Microsoft boosted its estimate for Xbox console sales for the year ended June 30 after the unit almost reached the full-year forecast for sales of 20 million machines at the end of December. The company now expects sales of 21 million to 22 million by June, Connors (Chief Financial Officer) said. Some analysts expect Microsoft to release a new Xbox machine for Christmas this year. Connors declined to comment on the release and said the company would begin talking about the new version at a May games conference.
J Allard to Deliver 2005 GDC Keynote: No Xbox2 Announcement?
>> From CNet News.com:
Organizers of the conference announced Thursday that Microsoft Vice President J. Allard, one of the top dogs in the Xbox division, will deliver a keynote address at the event, scheduled for March 7 to 11 in San Francisco. Allard will "discuss Microsoft's commitment to the next generation of interactive entertainment," according to the announcement from conference organizer CMP Media.
Based on previous events and a general sense that Microsoft is unlikely to rely on a third-tier executive to announce a product (Xbox2) so vital to the company's future, we'll take that to mean another not-too-specific presentation on coming technological advances. GDC is the forum where Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates unveiled the original Xbox in 2000.
ATI Patent reveals secrets of Xbox 2
>> From TheInquirer.net:
A PATENT has shown up at the US repository of such thing that gives us some more clues as to the nature of the technology that Microsoft and ATI will employ with its next generation Xbox and the R520 component. The patent is for a method and apparatus for determining a processing speed of an integrated circuit.
The patent, we think, is part of the effort to get CMOS processing - as in traditional processors - and dynamic logic processing - as in supercomputers - working on the same chip. Dynamic logic works at far faster speeds, hence the need for an integrated circuit to regulate the switching between the two.
Xorg For Gentoox Ready
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
Well, I said I'd try and go for a Wednesday release and for people in America - I went one better with a Tuesday release (sorry for everyone else... but Wednesday it is!). I've tested the magic installation on both Pro and Home editions and got only very minor bugs (mainly typos -- which have been fixed). Everything seems to work great - VNC still works... all resolutions still work. The only thing is, there is _still_ the bug of quitting Xfree then reloading it (colours go all weird and then the screen totally turns to garbage requiring a reboot). Of course, since we now have Xorg... we can do things like drop-shadows... however, since we dont have accelerated graphics this is almost useless (takes up 90% of CPU constantly)... but for anyone wondering what it looks like: check this screenshot. So, without further stalling... run magic NOW to upgrade to Xorg! Please report any bugs and any successes to me!
dvd2xbox v0.6.3
>> WiSo released a new version of dvd2xbox(info) - a DVD/CD-R to HD copy program. What's new/fixed: * fixed a bug with game not shown in the gamemanager if the titlename is emtpy. * fixed a bug which shows "path already exists" when choosing the destination dir and the current game title has no titlename. * fixed a bug which shows a blank text box when renaming directories which contain a default.xbe with no titlename. * fixed: enabled back button in xbe info screen. * added: change led color to reflect ripping status (orange ripping, red error, green done/idle). You can enable/disable it via the settings menu (default is off). * removed the entry «patch media check 1/2» from filemanager as ACL processing provides the same function. * added xbmc's filezilla ftp server. enable / disable it via the settings menu (default is off). * added configure option for naming ripped cdda tracks (see dvd2xbox.xml for more). Note: Installing this release will set all dvd2xbox settings to its defaults.

What's next for next-gen consoles?
>> From games.slashdot.org:
The BBC has news about the next-generation game consoles, with comments from various third parties. According to Rory Armes, studio general manager of EA in Europe, they have already received the development kits from Microsoft, but not yet from Sony and Nintendo. He assumes Sony's PlayStation 3 will have a little more under the hood and be more cost-efficient than Microsoft's Xbox 2. Gerhard Florin, head of EA in Europe, remarks 'PS3 will provide graphics indistinguishable from movies.'
Gentoox W.I.P. Xorg Upgrade
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
I've managed to get Xorg to work! I'm in the process of upgrading now but its going to take a while. Magic has been disabled in the mean time... I wouldnt like to give a time-frame on this upgrade - but it may take until Wednesday if not the weekend! I can confirm that VNC still works as it always has... and resolution selection will be even simpler now (from a coding perspective...) though xbvset will look the same as ever. Thanks for being patient!
Gentoox: Resctoox v1.3 *updated*
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
I've decided to go on a new angle with this after a great suggestion from nobspangle on the forums. Instead of totally removing these scripts, they have been dumped into Resctoox(info) and tweaked to work properly. The scripts have been removed permenantly from magic and I'm finishing up the testing of Resctoox v1.3. Everything seems to be going great. Resctoox v1.3 will feature BusyBox v1.0 (with WORKING large file support) along with nearly ALL the available BusyBox options compiled in (stuff like the httpd weren't worth having)!. Once Resctoox has booted, it will just be a case of running either "f-drive" or "e-drive" to move Gentoox about and there will be no risks involved of the rootfs becoming corrupted during transferral. Keep an eye out for a release some time later today.
*UPDATED* Okay, it's released. As always, read the manual and be careful! Also, let me know of any bugs (there may be some - its 5:25am!). Can I go to bed now?
